Is there a way of setting up a passworded area on a website for access by members only that can be controlled by the site administrator /allowing and disallowing users etc.

Yes. You need to create a directory in which to put all the private stuff, then password protect that directory.
Say you want to have forums but only make them available to a group of people who you want to give access ... install the forums in whatever directory you want, then use the File Manager from your main Control Panel to navigate to that directory. Find the directory name then look across a few columns to the right. You'll see where it says 'Protect' and 'Rename' in a box together. Click on 'Protect' and fill in the boxes. You can give it a name (just a lable for the login box and not really important) plus a box for 'Set/Update User' and 2 for password.
For some reason I don't get it says )Not required) beside the 'Set/Update User' box. I couldn't get it to work without something in there. These are for the Username and Password for the secure area.
Example: To demo this I've installed a phpBB forum on www.supportingyoursport.com (http://www.supportingyoursport.com) (there is a link on the site called 'forums' but that's different - anyone can go there. The test forums are located in directory www.supportingyoursport.com/phpbb (http://www.supportingyoursport.com/phpbb) When you try to go to that address you will get a login box. It has a title 'Private Forums' (the first box to fill in mentioned above) and a space for a Username and Password (the next boxes mentioned above).
I've set these to ...
Username: forums
Password: private
When you enter those it should take you into the phpbb forums I created several weeks ago to test something (should have passworded it then because I see I have picked up a couple of dodgy users already :1 (61): )
In the example I've set up I just created a text link at the bottom of the Left News section, which opens the phpbb forums in a new window.
