A couple of years ago I bought a nice pair of Nike trainers cheap in an outlet store in Florida. Great deal, except that after a week I developed an Achilles tendon problem (never had a problem with my Achilles in my life before) that took me over a year to shake off.

Lesson learnt the hard way about buying trainers that just looked good as opposed to being right for my feet. I've heard a few people mention similar stories lately and I thought it would be useful if we could get any advice on

a) avoiding Achilles problems, and/or

b) dealing with it once you have a problem.

Advice anyone please?

Basic advice would be
1. Break in new shoes slowly. If you're serious about running wear running shoes but get advice on which ones, not all runnng shoes ae the same. Have your gait analyzed. You may over pronate in which case you should look for shoes with extra stability.
2. Avoid high impact excercise (running) on consecutive days. Give yourself a chance to recover. If you want to excercise on consecutive days try strength training (weights) on the alternate days or use low impact excercise like bike riding or swimming.
3. If your achillies does get sore remember R(rest)I(ice)C(compress)E(elevate).
Rest - stay off it
Ice - bag of frozen peas on it for a while to reduce swelling. Works as well as all the expensive freeze sprays in the world.
Compress - elasticated bandage doubled over works a treat. Keep it on for a few days
Elevate - put your feet up when you're sitting down.

If it doesn't heal within a few days seek proper medical advice, its always better to be sure.

The treatment that I would suggest is take rest and allow the tendon to heal.Early treatment results in quick healing.

you can opt Achilles tendinopathy.
rest the lower leg and foot and avoid any harsh or intense activity until the symptoms disappear.
Wear well cushioned shoes and use ice to relieve pain.
