We've had a couple of people ask about how to add hit conters to their site (in sites using the sitebuilder). I've had a quick look and can find free sripts to use ok, but not all of them would be that easy to add for website beginners.
Anyone done this already and would be willing to post a 'How to'?

I used this site: http://www.amazingcounters.com/ it was pretty straight forward.

Thanks for that Andrew.
I also asked the author of the sitebuilder and his answer is copied below...
"I have not seen hit counters for a while but most of the scripts you can get are just cgi scripts that deliver an image and so you use it within image tags. So sure you could use a php or javascript widget just to insert the image tags and then upload the script to the cgi-bin directory. Be sure to use the fully qualified name of the script (with the domain name). Or you can just edit the html source with <a> and insert the image tag that refers to the script."
I think that's how the counters on the site provided by Andrew work. Some of the free counters have advertising attached so can look a bit messy, but some don't.

Here (http://www.hit-counter-download.com/)'s another site I came across that has html hit counters. Some decent looking ones there too (I prefer clean and simple myself).
I think the code provided with free hit counters often shows a link to the hit counter site too. I expect it's simple enough to edit out that part of the code if you prefer to keep the counter as clean as possible.

Couple of suggestions:
You might be able to put the Hit Counter on a hidden page. Not sure it that'll work though as it may only count hits on the page it's on, and if the page is hidden ....
You may be able to change the colour then hide it against a background of the same colour somewhere on the page, so only you will know it's there. It would probably be visible if you drag your mouse over it.
Easiest by far ... there are stats already available in your main Direct Admin Control Panel. They are more iinformative than a hit counter too. The only reason to use a hit counter rather than these is if you specifically wanted users to be able to see the hits. You'll find the stats if you look in the 'Your Account' (top) section > Site Summary/Statistics/Logs > second section down 'Domain Webalizer Stats' > click on your domain name.
I'd suggest you use the stats for now.

Didn't know there were stats but cheers for that Paul!

Good stuff guys. Quick start on your sites too.
Take time to have a browse through this section of the forums too - some things already covered that could save you a lot of time.

I've used www.statcounter.com (http://www.statcounter.com) for a couple of years now. They generate the code for your counter and tell you exactly where to paste the code into your own. I found it very easy to do and back then i didn't have much of a clue about web design.
